Q: What’s BOTOX® Cosmetics, Restylane®, Perlane®, JUVÉDERM™, Radiesse®, and ArteFill®?

BOTOX® Cosmetics (Botulinum toxin)

Botox® Cosmetics is a substance that works by preventing the impulses from the nerve endings from reaching the facial muscles, thereby preventing the constant contraction of the muscle and causing relaxation of the wrinkles. This allows the skin to smooth out and look younger and healthier. The effect of a Botox® Cosmetics treatment lasts approximately three to six months. Repeated application of Botox® facilitates significant weakening of the muscle and delays formation of additional wrinkles.

Restylane® , Perlane®, JUVÉDERM™

Restylane®, Perlane® and JUVÉDERM™ belong to a group of FDA-approved synthetic filler materials made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid is used to enhance lips or fill spaces and eliminate deep creases and wrinkles. During treatments, Restylane®, Perlane® or JUVÉDERM™ is injected beneath the skin at the deep lines, or into the lips, providing a firm, full appearance. These products are all FDA approved. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar/protein complex that is present in human body. The correction achieved by injecting hyaluronic acid products lasts from four to twelve months. Radiesse®

Radiesse® is an FDA-approved synthetic dermal filler that is also used for correction of facial lines and wrinkles such as naso-labial folds. Made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel, Radiesse® is injected under the skin giving you immediate, visible improvement of folds and wrinkles, and providing long-lasting results. In many patients, the effects of Radiesse® may last a year or more. Offering clinically proven safety and longevity, Radiesse® is a convenient treatment that stimulates the body to produce new collagen — often with just one or two office visits. ArteFill®

ArteFill® is the first FDA-approved permanent soft tissue synthetic filler used to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It is also known in Canada and Europe as Artecoll®. ArteFill® is directly injected into the skin for immediate and long-lasting results. It is made of polymethylmethacrylate microspheres suspended in bovine collagen. This solution initially functions as a dermal filler, and subsequently causes the body to produce its own natural collagen to naturally replace the injected collagen in the treated areas. Q: How are the Injections Performed?

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Rayham performsBOTOX®, Restylane®, Perlane®, JUVÉDERM™, Radiesse®, ArteFill®, and your ownfat injections in his offices in Manhattan/NYC, Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York. These procedures are usually done in an office setting with local anesthetic cream and possible local anesthetic dental block for facial fillers.

BOTOX® injections are very well tolerated by patients. A small layer of local anesthetic cream is sometimes applied for additional comfort. The smallest size needles used to administer several tiny injections into the areas of forehead and around the eyes. The recovery process is minimal and the patients are able to leave the office and get back to their usual activities within minutes of the procedure. You should see flattening of your wrinkles starting anytime from three days to two weeks and the effect should last for three to six month.

Synthetic Injectable fillers, such asRestylane®, Perlane®, JUVÉDERM™, Radiesse®, andArteFill® are usually done in the office following application of anesthetic ointment, or sometimes dental block, to reduce discomfort. Pre and post-procedure ice application helps significantly with swelling and reduction of chances for bruising. A synthetic filler substance or your own fat is injected below the skin surface to fill hollow areas and creases, or plump the lips and back of the hands.

If fat harvesting is required, it is done with the use of local anesthetic injection into the inner thigh or abdominal areas. Addition of mild sedation makes fat harvesting process easily tolerable by the majority of patients.

Q: What Should I Anticipate After the Procedure?

FollowingBOTOX® treatment you can immediately return to your normal activities. Certain post-procedure guidelines may be useful to further expedite your recovery period. You should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

Following synthetic filler or fat injection procedures the areas of the face should be iced for minutes to hours to reduce swelling.

Following your filler injection procedures you will have some swelling that should dissipate in 2-5 days for synthetic fillers, or 1-2 weeks with fat injections. Application of ice to the treated areas for 24-48 hrs should decrease the amount of swelling and further expedite the healing process. This procedures produces temporary results, lasting a few months to several years or more, based on the filler used, treatment site and individual patient factors. Some products may be permanent.
