Q: What’s Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a skin refinishing treatment. Dermabrasion helps to remove outer layer of the skin by controlled surgical scraping technique. It refinishes the skin affected by wrinkles, prior surgical, traumatic or acne scars. This treatment softens the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance. It is especially effective in the treatment of fine facial wrinkles and can be performed on small areas of skin, such as around the mouth, or on the entire face.

Dermabrasion can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as facelift, scar removal or revision, or chemical peel.

Q: Why Should I Consider Dermabrasion?

  • To refinish you facial skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • To reduce unsightly acne scars.
  • To flatten traumatic or surgical scars and blend them in with the rest of the skin.

Q: How is Dermabrasion Performed?

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Rayham performs dermabrasion in his offices or hospital setting in Manhattan/NYC, Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York facilities. It may be performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area, combined with mild sedation. You’ll be awake but relaxed, and will feel minimal discomfort. Sometimes a numbing spray is used along with or instead of local anesthesia. In more severe cases use of general anesthesia may be preferred for safety and comfort reasons. In such case you’ll sleep through the procedure.

The procedures usually take from a few minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how large an area of skin is involved. It’s not uncommon for the procedure to be performed more than once, or in stages, especially when scarring is deep or a large area of skin is involved. During actual procedure Dr. Rayham scrapes away the outermost layer of skin with a rough wire brush, or a burr containing diamond particles, attached to a motorized handle. The scraping continues until more uniform level of the skin is reached to make wrinkles, scars or acne scars blend in with the rest of the skin and to make them less visible.

Q: What Should I Anticipate After the Procedure?

Immediately after procedure your face will be covered by special ointment that will help to initiate the healing and prevent excessive scabbing.

Right after the procedure, your skin will be quite red and swollen. The swelling will begin to subside in a few days to a week. You’ll feel some tingling, burning, or aching. The pain associated with this procedure is readily controlled with pain medications.

Over a period of days to two weeks a scab or crust will form over the treated area as it begins to heal. Gradually the initial scab will fall off as a new layer of tight, pink skin forms underneath. Your face may itch as new skin starts to grow. It is essential to apply prescribed ointment several times a day to keep the treated areas moist, as this should expedite the recovery process.

In any case, Dr. Rayham will give you detailed instructions to care for your skin after surgery. It’s very important that you understand his instructions and follow them exactly, to ensure the best possible healing. Dr. Rayham encourages his patients to refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after the surgery. If you notice the treated area beginning to get worse instead of better-for example, if it becomes increasingly red, raised, and itchy after it has started to heal-it may be a sign that abnormal scars are beginning to form. In such a case you should call our office as soon as possible, so that you can receive the treatment early.

Refinishing treatments can offer dramatic improvements in the surface of your skin, but it will take some time before you see the final results.

You can expect to be back at work in about two weeks. It is essential to avoid sun exposure postoperatively for twelve months. SPF 35 or higher sunblock should be worn while outside even if you are not under direct sunlight. You should wear non-allergenic makeup for six month after the operation. When your new skin is fully reformed, the color should closely match the surrounding skin, making the procedure virtually undetectable.

If you live in New York or nearby, you can go home the day of your dermabrasion procedure. Our out of town patients normally stay overnight in one of our recommended hotels and can be driven home or fly home the next day following their postoperative check-up with Dr. Rayham.
